Research Projects

Each year, IRDA's R&D Team conducts more than one hundred research projects in sustainable agriculture. What's more, IRDA is working with Quebec's key agricultural stakeholders to find concrete solutions.

Strawberries
2013-2018 • Fruit production

NPK trials for strawberries on mineral soils in Québec

The data generated by this project was used to develop a new NPK fertilization chart that reflects technical, agronomic, and environmental issues.

Beetroots
2013-2018 • Market gardening

NPK fertilizer trials for beets on mineral soils in Québec

This project was aimed at determining the nutrient needs of beets based on soil texture and phosphorus and potassium levels under Québec growing conditions.

Laying hens
2016-2018 • Livestock production

Revising the nutrient balance sheet for estimating phosphorus loading in laying hen production

This project was set up to test the nutrient balance sheet method as a tool for estimating phosphorus output from pullets and laying hens.

Laying hens
2017-2019 • Livestock production

Field tests on the nitrogen efficiency coefficient and nitrogen release period of pelleted laying hen manure on grain corn and oat crops

This project will determine the nitrogen efficiency coefficient (EC) of pelleted laying hen manure, a source that is interesting an increasing number of growers, both organic and conventional, because of its efficiency.

Plasticulture

Banded controlled-release and conventional fertilizer in horticultural production under plastic mulch

The aim of this project was to field-test sound irrigation practices and band application of various types of fertilizers at ridging time to eliminate fertigation and increase the efficiency of fertilizer and water use under plastic mulch.

Green manure
2016-2018 • Field crops

Effectiveness of an annual vs. end-of-season legume green manure crop in increasing soil resilience and providing sufficient nitrogen

The project compared the nitrogen uptake effects of green manure crops grown for a full season, in association with a main crop, or after it is harvested.

Organic corn
2015-2018 • Field crops

Developing a nitrogen fertilization program based on green manure supplemented by a manure-based starter fertilizer in organic grain production

In a wheat/grain corn/soya rotation, green manure can be used to obtain profitable organic grain corn yields while limiting phosphorus pollution.

The solutions developed by IRDA aim to...

Ensure the sustainability

and quality of soil, water, and air

Protect the health and well-being

of local communities by improving the quality of crop and livestock production, with an emphasis on animal welfare

Safeguard the economic viability

of crop and livestock production
